Good Reasons To Be A Vegetarian (Part 1)

18 03 2009

I’m a vegetarian, and I’m proud of it. Let me share with you reasons why I became one. You may or may not agree with me but it’s worth the sharing:

1. You’ll be in good company. When many people hear the word “vegetarian,” the image suddenly appears is that of Indian guru, complete with loincloth and skinny arms and legs. However, vegetarians are people from all walks of life. Many prominent women and men are vegetarians. Consider just these: Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci, Paul and Linda McCartney, Hank Aaron, Billie Jean King, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Dustin Hoffman, Steve Martin…

2. A vegetarian diet is healthier than a meat-based one.

3. A vegetarian diet uses natural resources (land, water, energy) more efficiently than does a meat-based diet.

4. A vegetarian diet does not require the suffering and death of animals.

5. It is better for your budget.

6. You will help all creatures, great and small.

7. You become closer to the environment.

8. You will help conserve the world’s food supply.

9. It’s unlikely that you’ll get mad cow disease or foot and mouth disease.

10. According to Socrates, you will live a peaceful and healthy life.

11. It helps fight impotence.

12. Vegetarians do not contribute to the suffering of cattle. Male cattle in the beef industry are routinely castrated, almost always without anasthetics. The two main reasons cited for this painful, barbaric practice are to create a more docile, easier to handle animal, and to produce an animal that gains more weight more quickly and is thus more profitable. The castration procedure involves pinning the animal down, slitting the scrotum with a knife, exposing the testicles, and ripping them out.

13. Spontaneous cancer cures are linked to vegetarian diets.

14. Vegetables are the food of the gods. People lived the longest when they were vegetarian in the Bible. Adam lived 930 years and Methuselah lived 969 years.

15. You will no longer be a predator! Franz Kafka, the Czech-born German writer of visionary fiction, reportedly made this remark while admiring fish in an aquarium: “Now I can look at you in peace; I don’t eat you anymore.”

God bless us and see you at the finish line.

“Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” Genesis 1:29
